Flowers figure a lot nowadays in every occasion or non-occasion. The practice of flower sending has been a universal gesture. Flowers are things of beauty that can cheer a person up, convey a solemn condolence, be a colorful apology and a great way to get another date. It was in the Victorian era that flowers had meanings. These are not really used now, but it would be fun to know how people communicated through signs, gestures and this case through flowers.
The most famous flowers of all time would be the Rose. When a suitor gave a bouquet containing a pink and white roses, it would signify a proposal for a friendship which is pure. A combination of white and red with a hint of yellow rose flowers meant pure, passionate and zealous love. A simple Sunflower signified adoration, which is very open ended since it is given at the 'getting to know you' part. Reading on the flower meanings, it surprises me that one of the famous flowers, the Lavender, known for its calming quality had signified distrust…While the Rehdonderon was given as a warning to beware.
The Chrysanthemum as well as the tulip meant several romantic messages ranging from the most innocent and pure to the most passionate. My favorite flower of all is the Gladioulus, the name itself means the sword flower…thats why to give one signified strength of character. Today, flower arrangements veer more to the artsy practice of combining blooms and complimenting colors. Flowers have gone from meaning a lot, to having to cost a lot to mean a anything.
